if you are looking to book Shag Up North teachers for one off dance events or for private tuition
Collegiate Shag is a fun and energetic partner dance from the 1920s danced primarily to uptempo swing and pre-swing jazz music. The dance originated in the South (possibly in New Orleans) during the 1920s and 1930s and has been known at times as the “Flea Hop”. The dance is known for its hopping basic step and high energy footwork that separates it from other forms of swing and other dances that use the “shag” name, such as Carolina Shag or St. Louis Shag.
Beginners welcome although to get the most out of your class take a peek at a video (click the picture to the left) this will show you the basic footwork and hold that is required for Collegiate Shag.
If you are new to shag we recommend attending the beginners class only. You are welcome to stay & watch the improvers class.
Improvers class is designed for shaggers who are confident with the beginners class and wish to progress to the next level. You will need to know tuck turns into open or closed, pass bys, side by side basic and breaks to be able to participate in this class.
We recommend you wear comfortable clothing suitable for moderate exercise. Flat flexible shoes with a cushioned insole or dance shoes. Dance shoes are ideal, they aid turns and are gentler on the knees. For the ladies Elaine highly recommend a sports bra! To start with Shag can be energetic so you may want to bring a towel.
